The exhibition “Gigi Guadagnucci Gio’ Pomodoro | Conversation on nature” was presented at a press conference. The exhibition, conceived by the Municipal Administration of Massa and in particular by the Department of Culture, brings together the two great masters of Italian sculpture, offering a unique opportunity for comparison and reflection on the theme of nature through their works. The exhibition project is curated by Mirco Taddeucci, in collaboration with Bruto Pomodoro, son of the artist and vice president of the Gio’ Pomodoro Archive – chaired by Rossella Farinotti – and presents the critical texts of Paolo Bolpagni, art historian and director of the Ragghianti Foundation. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday 21 June at 6: 00 pm at the Gigi Guadagnucci Museum in Villa Rinchiostra. In the presence of authorities, journalists and professionals, the exhibition contents and the calendar of collateral events that will accompany the entire duration of the exhibition, which will continue until August 21,were illustrated during the meeting. The exhibition aims to create an unprecedented combination between the works of Gigi Guadagnucci and those of Gio’ Pomodoro, highlighting the vision of nature shared by the two artists, with a specific focus on their relationship with the Sun. It is no coincidence that the exhibition will open to the public on the day of the summer solstice, kicking off the calendar of summer initiatives for 2025.In a press conference, the Mayor of Massa Francesco Persiani and the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Massa Monica Bertoneri gave great importance to the role that the city plays, declaring that this exhibition aims to be the first of a series that connects Gigi Guadagnucci with other excellences in the world of sculpture, but not only. The project also aims to redevelop the Museum and honor the contribution of the fellow citizen artist. Bruto Pomodoro also spoke on this topic, declaring: “This project was not born by chance. Monica Bertoneri and I met last summer in anticipation of the 110th anniversary of the birth of the sculptor Gigi Guadagnucci. From here, an exhibition was born that wants to put down roots useful for making Massa a center of aggregation for contemporary art and sculpture. ” On the other hand, the curator Mirco Taddeucci offered an in-depth reading of the exhibition, investigating the desire to create a dialogue between two sculptors who – although united by the same love for nature – use and explore different sculptural techniques and languages. In this regard, he underlined: “The topic on which the exhibition focuses is the creation of a conversation, as the title suggests, between two artists united by a common theme: that of nature. The love for that nature that is part of the place where they worked for a long period of their activity, but also nature conceived as a pretext to talk about movement, architectural structures, space and relationships between full and empty, which are – as Gio’ Pomodoro cites – the obsession of every true sculptor”. The exhibition presents itself as an unprecedented research on the two giants of the Italian sculptural panorama, who not only share research on the relationship with nature but also possess a profound technical mastery and an enormous curiosity, elements that have allowed them to experiment with particular materials, such as Trani stone, Apuan statuary marble and bronze, to the point of also creating works on paper. The formal outcomes of the works of the two artists are similar in some ways, but they follow different paths: the more emotional approach of Gigi Guadagnucci contrasts with the more rational and faithful to the studio approach of Gio’ Pomodoro. The spontaneous sculptural lightness of Gigi Guadagnucci is the authentic reflection of his exploratory character; in fact, the artist from Massa spent most of his career in Paris where he came into contact with artists of a certain caliber such as Ossip Zadkine, Beniamino Joppolo, Zoran Mušič, Nardo Dunchi, Remo Bianco, Jean Tinguely and many others, who profoundly influenced his style. Starting from an informal sculpture, Guadagnucci arrived at an almost paradoxical type of marble processing, in his search for lightness and transparency. On the other hand, the more logical aspect of Gio’ Pomodoro is highlighted, who places the emphasis on his research dedicated to the concept of “torsion”. Paolo Bolpagni underlines: “Technically, Pomodoro’s elements are obtained from cylindrical drums, with variable thickness but always proportional to the radius; from them arise rotating movements of the peripheral parts with respect to the center. Thus emerges the notion of “torsion”, which is central to Gio’ Pomodoro, so much so that it is the cardinal principle of many works, as an emblem of a tension that releases strength and movement”.
