TONI ALFANO / SACRED LOVE PROFAN LOVE
From Mary Magdalene to Nagao Minako
Stories of prostitutes, mothers, saints and sisters
We are pleased to announce that the artist Toni Alfano and the Municipality of Casole d’Elsa are promoting the exhibition project “SACRED LOVE PROFAN LOVE” sponsored by the Tuscany Region and the Italy-Japan Foundation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The inauguration of the exhibition will be on Saturday 7 June from 4: 30 pm and will continue until Sunday 2 November 2025.The theme is a dialogue between ancient and contemporary art and a broader dialogue between the West and the East, bringing together figures and symbols of the two cultures. Toni Alfano, born in Legnano Mi in 1977,has chosen to live in Casole d’Elsa since 2013,an excellent village in Tuscany that in recent years has been enjoying a renewed and growing cultural fervor. The dialogue between his works inspired by the East and his historical works was born naturally; the themes, characters, feelings are the same that we find told in the art of all times and all places: from Etruria in the 6th century BC to Japan in the 17th century up to the present day. His technique, descialbo, is also a language that bridges archaeology and the contemporary, between past and future. The Museo Civico Archeologico e della Collegiata of Casole d’Elsa houses and preserves Etruscan finds and works of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century that tell the cultural and artistic history of its territory. Casole d’Elsa has always been a town rich in art and culture; the extraordinary sculpture of a female divinity renamed “Testa Bargagli” was found here, and artists such as Alessandro Casolani and Augusto Bastianini were born and worked here. The exhibition itinerary includes a selection of works (portraits, fragments, drawings) and an original work created specifically for the museum in tribute to the “Testa Bargagli”. The artist’s works are housed in the rooms of the Museo Civico Archeologico and the collegiate church where they interact with the historical collection. The Municipality of Casole d’Elsa has always encouraged artistic events and, over the years, has been able to renew its history thanks to the many contemporary works of art present in the area. Casole d’Elsa welcomes tourists and citizens with an open-air museum in the streets of the medieval-looking village, an enchanting and unexpected combination. The Museo Civico, recognized as being of national historical interest, is the treasure chest that holds the oldest works. A living place that has always hosted exhibitions and artists and which this year welcomes Toni Alfano and his wonderful works of art. The exhibition can be visited during the normal opening hours of the museum upon payment of the entrance ticket. Civic Archaeological and Collegiate Museum
