In a present that multiplies tools of control, borders, and protective devices, safety appears as a constant—yet increasingly fragile—promise. It is from this contradiction that *Safe. No One Saves Themselves Alone* takes shape: a solo exhibition by Andrea Musto, curated by Paola Martino, hosted at Spazio MU. RO in Milan from September 22 to October 4,2026.The exhibition addresses one of the most urgent themes of our time: the relationship between safety and vulnerability, between protection and isolation. On one side, lives upended by war, violence, and forced migration; on the other, individuals who are seemingly safe yet increasingly alone, disconnected, and unable to forge authentic relationships. These are two realities that only appear distant; the artist brings them into dialogue, revealing how both belong to the same human condition. Andrea Musto’s works do not seek an aesthetic representation of pain but rather convey its presence. Sculptures, installations, and material-based works create a journey in which bodies, hands, children, mothers, and fragments of memory become testaments to a shared vulnerability. The very material of the artworks—rough and layered—preserves traces of the wound, transforming the exhibition space into a place for direct engagement with the present. As curator Paola Martino notes: “We live in a time that constantly constructs the idea of safety. Borders, screens, devices, habits: everything seems designed to protect us. Yet this protection is fragile, often illusory. *Safe* arises precisely from this contradiction, reminding us that no salvation can be merely individual. ” The exhibition unfolds as a journey through various forms of contemporary fragility. From images of war to the rubble of history, from migration and borders to the new forms of isolation born of hyper-connectivity and social alienation, each work invites the visitor to reflect on the very meaning of safety. Musto’s work engages in a dialogue with an artistic tradition—spanning from Francisco Goya to Anselm Kiefer—that has sought to give form to the unrepresentable, not by illustrating violence, but by making its lingering traces palpable. The wounds of historical memory, ranging from the Siege of Leningrad to contemporary conflicts, intertwine with the anxieties of the present, dissolving geographical and temporal distances. The exhibition design physically engages the visitor. Certain works, placed on the floor, compel viewers to alter their posture, transforming the act of looking into a gesture of participation and responsibility. Alongside the installations, notebooks hang in the space—fragments of thought, notes, and words that do not explain the artworks but rather expand their human dimension, presenting writing as a form of resistance against oblivion. “Children growing up amidst rubble and those who turn play into a simulation of trauma belong to the same era. In a world where some struggle to survive, others vanish without ever moving. Two different yet inseparable conditions, ” observes Paola Martino. *Safe. Nessuno si salva da solo* (Safe. No One Saves Themselves Alone) offers neither answers nor consolation. Instead, it invites us to recognize that safety cannot be built through separation, but only through shared responsibility. In an age marked by conflict, humanitarian crises, and new forms of isolation, the exhibition reaffirms art’s role as a space for bearing witness and fostering critical awareness—capable of restoring visibility to what is too often ignored.
